Give Martin a chance at Kansas State

For Kansas State to promote assistant Frank Martin to head coach was a disgrace to the program's firmly established tradition, a tradition the Wildcats have worked diligently over the years to construct.

It has required an extraordinary level of consistency for K-State to average a 15-15 record over the past 13 years. The Wildcats haven't beaten rival Kansas in Manhattan since 1983, a run of 24 consecutive defeats. Compared with the difficulty of achieving that, UCLA's 88-game winning streak was like ordering from the drive-through at Wendy's.

Hiring Martin demonstrated no respect for this, no respect at all.

“I know I wasn't the media's first choice," Martin says.

He is aware of commentators who blasted his promotion following Bob Huggins' departure to West Virginia.

NYC: Ground Zero "Construction Command Center" chief steps down

Despite the early pretense of democracy in drawing up the post-9-11 Lower Manhattan development plans, most New Yorkers were not aware that a special "command center" had been created to oversee the multiple construction projects until a change of leadership there happened to make some small headlines. The militarist terminology is all too appropriate, given the fascistic nature of the redevelopment plans. From AP via Crain's New York Business, April 17 (link added):

Head of downtown rebuilding agency resigns The head of an agency coordinating more than 60 construction projects in and around ground zero resigned Tuesday after two years on the job.

Charles Maikish, executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center, said he had only agreed to take the job for two years and planned to return to the private sector.

Affinity to Distribute Trendy Lifepop Speaker Bags & Cases

Affinity Electronics of Canada is bringing retro back in style: the firm has announced that it will distribute the Lifepop line of trendy mobile music wear. The funky-designed bags and carrying cases integrate speakers, and support MP3 music players, iPod, and compatible mobile phones.

Designed in Brooklyn, NY, Lifepop offers items like the Groove Master Messenger Bag; and the Retro Rock Steady gym bag. The Phoney Music cases are disguised as typical CD cases, but house speakers and a slot for your portable player. Each bag and carrying case is powered by batteries, and operates via simple plug-and-play: no headphones are needed.

We wanted something different and unique for our mobile media line-up, explained Fiona Jeffery, Vice President, Affinity Electronics.

Rec center/YMCA plans have inherent flaws

There are several aspects to the proposed YMCA ("recreation center") scheduled for the ballot on May 8. The four most notable are: the location, the facility itself, the method of funding, and accessibility/membership fees.

In selecting the city-owned Mather property on Fallis Road, adjacent to Phillips Park, the city rejected a more central location. Neighborhood residents have expressed concerns regarding traffic, but the YMCA would have the luxury of operating programs in Phillips Park, and the Loveland High School swim team would have an indoor pool within walking distance. A more central location could provide a business anchor, bringing patrons to other businesses and activities nearby, adding to the synergy much needed in our business districts.

The facility will incorporate a gym, indoor lap pool, various workout areas, child care, YMCA offices and an outdoor aquatic play area.
