April 19, 2007 – New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, Albany County District Attorney David Soares, Albany Mayor Gerald Jennings, Albany Police Chief James Tuffey and State Police Superintendent Preston Felton today announced the indictments of 14 individuals charged with narcotics trafficking in Albany neighborhoods, stemming from an investigation dubbed “Operation Cash."

The charges unsealed today before Albany County Court Judge Thomas A. Breslin allege that the defendants were part of a crack and powder cocaine distribution network that brought drugs from New York City into Albany's neighborhoods. More than three pounds of cocaine – possessing a street value of $130,000 – were seized during the investigation.

According to the indictment, the leaders of the cocaine conspiracy operated out of an apartment at 48 Second Ave., in the South End of Albany.

US farmers sue Australian wheat exporter over role in oil-for-food ...

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - U.S. wheat farmers have filed a class-action lawsuit against Australian wheat exporter AWB Ltd., alleging it paid bribes and kickbacks to the Saddam Hussein regime that cost wheat growers in America millions of dollars in lost sales. The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal district court in New York City, contends AWB and its subsidiary AWB (U.S.A.) Ltd. were involved in a bribery and money laundering conspiracy that included various agencies of the Iraqi government, a Jordanian trucking company and international shipping companies. It also alleges violations of U.S. antitrust laws. The complaint contends the companies illegally funneled money from the United Nations' oil-for-food program through bank accounts in the United States. The suit, which seeks more than $100 million in damages, alleges violations of the Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO.Benjamin Brown, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said AWB participated in the scheme in exchange for the Iraqis excluding the company's American competitors, which depressed prices for American farmers."AWB knew by participating in this scheme they would be profiting really at the expense of American farmers," Brown said.AWB, the exclusive marketeer of bulk wheat exports from Australia, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Chamber Choir to perform in Carnegie Hall

Thirty-seven singers from the Cal State Long Beach Chamber Choir will travel to New York City next week to perform in the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

"The CSULB Chamber Choir is one of the most recognized collegiate ensembles in the western U.S.," said Jonathan Talberg, conductor of the Chamber Choir and director of choral, vocal and opera studies at CSULB.

The performance is part of a regular series held each night of April, in which the top choirs in the country are invited to perform. According to second-year member Kyle Stevens, there were once plans to demolish Carnegie Hall, but this series has helped to bring in the funds required to preserve the hall and its history.

"This does not lessen the meaning of performing on the stage," Stevens said, as only the highest level groups with the best reputations are invited.

Record Storm Pummels East Coast

A menacing spring storm punished the Northeast for a second straight day Monday, dumping more than 8 inches of rain on Central Park and sending refrigerators and pickup trucks floating down rivers in one of the region's worst storms in recent memory. "This one is really a horror show," Gov. Eliot Spitzer said after touring hard-hit areas north of New York City. The nor'easter left a huge swath of devastation, from the beaches of South Carolina to the mountains of Maine. It knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people and was blamed for at least 11 deaths nationwide, including a New Jersey man who drowned inside a car.

The storm showed no immediate sign of letting up. The National Weather Service predicted showers through Wednesday night in the New York City area, with rain mixed with snow at times.
