Manhattan Comes Back to Hand Baseball 13-6 Loss
3/27/07 -- The Long Island University baseball team gave up nine runs over the last three innings, falling to Manhattan by a 13-6 margin at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers' four-run sixth inning erased a 6-4 Blackbird lead and dropped Long Island to 3-10 for the season. Sophomore Frank DiMasi (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Senior Orlando Cruz (White Plains, N.Y.) also drove in a pair of runs and was 2-for-4. Long Island took advantage of a pair of Manhattan (8-10) errors and plated a run in each of the first two innings. The Jaspers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the second. Matt Rizzotti started things off with a leadoff home run to right center, and, after an out, two walks put runners on first and second for Rene Ruiz. Ruiz laced a single to right, scoring Marc Giordano, before two consecutive balks plated Ruben Perez and Ruiz to give Manhattan a 4-2 lead.
Step It Up 2007: Sea of People Flood Lower Manhattan
A day before the rains hit NYC, an estimated 1500 people arrived at Battery Park wearing blue to form a human line around the southern tip of Manhattan to mark the new water line if sea levels rise due to climate change. Activist and founder of Step It Up Bill McKibben (also in blue) spoke to the sea of people before he headed off to DC (via train) for the evening rally there. The crowd cheered as McKibben listed several of the 1300 Step It Up events taking place across the country, more than he ever imagined would come together to send congress a message to reduce emissions 80% by 2050. Volunteers had stacks of postcards ready for signatures to send off to Washington and at least one congressman was listening - Anthony Wiener who represents the NYC boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens also spoke at the rally.
City unveils logo, slogan
The official date of incorporation was April 13, 1957. And, not that it means anything, but 50 years later that date fell on Friday the 13th. City officials past and present, along with employees and longtime residents gathered at the B.J. Clark Community Center Friday afternoon to remember where Azle has been and to recognize how far the city has come in just 50 short years. .
