Marist Continues Offensive Surge, Downs Manhattan

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team used another offensive explosion to win its second straight game. The Red Foxes earned a 20-13 triumph against Manhattan at Eastchester High School on Friday to improve their record to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League play. It marked the second straight contest Marist scored at least 20 goals, the first time in program history the Red Foxes reached the plateau in back-to-back games.

Freshman midfielder Liz Falco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) once again led the charge for the Red Foxes, scoring four goals to give her a team-high 21 on the season. Falco also tied the program's single-game record with eight ground balls.

Falco was one of four Red Foxes to finish with a four-point game. Junior attacker Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.) each had three goals and an assist, and junior midfielder Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a goal and three assists.

Vinyl Records Avoid Inevitable in Hipster Brooklyn

The vinyl record was supposed to be dead by now, long since swept away by the powerful winds of new technology. If it wasn't the low-quality but highly portable cassette, then surely the CD or mp3 should have finished off the bulky, scratch-prone relics of an earlier era.

The vinyl record appears to have found a welcoming audience lately, however, at least in the Brooklyn hipster havens of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. No less than six new music shops have opened in recent years, including four that specialize in vinyl.

The offerings include Greenpoint's Eat Records, a vinyl store/caf with tables packed along its walls; to the punk rock-focused Passout Record Shop, and the 3-year-old Sound Fix records, a large store that also sells CDs and is adding a performance stage in its storefront.

Walmart writes off plan to open store in Manhattan

NEW YORK, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, cancelled a plan to open its first discount store in Manhattan due to strong opposition from labor unions, local media reported on Wednesday.

H. Lee Scott Jr., Walmart's chief executive, told The New York Times on Tuesday that conducting business in New York is so expensive and exasperating that "I don't think it's worth the effort."

Walmart spokeswoman Mona Williams, however, clarified afterwards that Mr. Scott was referring to Manhattan only, not the entire city.

The company has been trying to crack into urban markets and expand beyond its suburban base throughout most of the country, but has encountered stout resistance to its plan to enter America's bigger cities, such as New York, Chicago, Cleveland, and Los Angeles.

Uganda: IGG Probes KCC Tenders

The Inspector General of Government has instituted investigations into the Kampala City Council allocation of tenders for markets and other services and the revenue collections.

The probe comes at a time when the council and a senior army officer, Brig. Elly Kayanja, are battling over a tender for the management of the Park Yard market, outside Nakivubo Stadium.
